Thomas
I was not able to find a site to give me a lot of historical information on the Thomas surname origin. I will post what I have found and suggest that anyone with more information forward it to me. First found in Bavaria, where this surname surfaced in mediaeval times as one of the notable families of the region. Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Matheus Thomas, who sailed for America in 1709 with his wife and daughters. Heinrich Thomas also came in 1709, settling in Carolina of Pennsylvania. Johann Philip Thoma came to Philadelphia in 1764, Carl Wilhelm Thoma settled in Texas in 1845, and Gottlieb Thomae settled in Canada in 1783.
Spelling variations include: Thoma, Thoman, Thom, Thoms, Toma, Thomas, Tomas, Thomasius, Thoeman, Thome, Thomen, Thomme, Thomm, Demel, Dehmel and many more.
